E. F. S. - Experimentální folkové studio
Praha, Česká republika
Festival years: 2025
The band was founded in the autumn of 1982 by Milan Benedikt Karpíšek, Michal Polcar, and Václav Černý. All three gentlemen were members of the folk ensemble Jiskra, but they formed this band with the goal of performing their own original songs in an unconventional musical arrangement. Their sources of inspiration include Czech music from various eras, as well as country, rock and roll, and blues.
Over the years, they have performed not only across the Czech Republic, but also in Germany, Italy, and Belgium. The band has released three CDs, and many of their recordings — such as the song cycles Cirkus and O Radoušovi — were produced by Czech Radio and Czech Television. In 1985, the band won the Porta award in the national finals in Lochotín.
Many musicians have passed through the band E.F.S. over the years (including another Jiskra member, Aleš Tolar). Since 2021, the lineup has consisted of:
- Michal Polcar (guitar, lead vocals, songwriter)
- Milan Benedikt Karpíšek (violin, electric mandolin, vocals, songwriter)
- Pepa "Žíla" Petrželka (electric guitar, vocals)
- Standa Kajer (bass guitar, vocals)
- Jarda Šperl (drums)
The festival is a regular member of the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts CIOFF.
